Poverty, stress, and mental health are just a few of the issues we witness in our school on a daily basis. Everyday, children are bringing in situations they deal with at their home and it can become difficult for them to turn that off once they enter the classroom.
Sometimes my students need a little bit of extra help and space to change their inner state from upset to composed in order to optimize learning.
By creating a Safe Place in my classroom, my students will have a place where they can calm down and collect their thoughts without escalating the situation or making themselves more upset.
My Project
These items will create a center in our classroom where children can go to change their inner state from upset to composed in order to optimize their learning. It is the centerpiece of self-regulation.
The chair, pillow, and soft rug serves as a base for our Safe Place.
The rest of the items in the Safe Place will serve as activities that lead the students through the five steps of self-regulation: I Am, I Calm, I Feel, I Choose, I Solve.
The Safe Space created will be an area that has a seat which feels soft to touch, some fidget toys, a timer, and some games. These will be things that will help students self-regulate. They will set the timer and once the timer is done, they will be expected to return to their seat. If they need some more time, they will set them timer one more time. The Safe Place will be a good way to teach students how to handle their emotions in a healthy way.
