My students need a listening center, Magna-Tiles and other items to add to our conscious discipline area to help assist them in being able to problem solve as well as help with self in-dependency.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a lead Head Start teacher in Ohio. I have a classroom of 17 students ages 3-5. I often also have two and a half year old students from our center's Early Head Start program participating in the classroom. This is because students are constantly transitioning into our classroom. We focus our instruction on supporting all areas of each student's development. We also focus our instruction on fostering fundamental skills necessary for Kindergarten readiness.
My students are energetic, creative, and highly compassionate individuals!
My students enter the classroom every morning excited and motivated to learn. They heavily enjoy activities that incorporate sensory, art, music, movement and building.
I am most proud of my students' ability to form positive relationships with one another. This creates an environment that has a high level of cooperation and teamwork!
My Project
As part of the curriculum and my classroom routine, we focus heavily on mental health. The majority of my students live in lower income areas. Some of my students have been through a lot of personal trauma. For most of my students, coming to school is the only time they can have a mental break from the home environment. The listening center will be implemented in several ways. We are currently introducing conscious discipline into our daily routine and would love to add that to our quiet area as well as a make it option for our "Wild Things Area Quiet Box". (This box will have the Magna-Tiles, sensory dough and more.) This is an area where several of the items listed will be used to help a child calm down or regroup their thoughts during the time they may need to rest alone or just work independently on literacy, fine motor, and cognitive.
