This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school serves a vibrant community of predominantly Hispanic students, many of whom come from low-income households and face barriers to emotional and academic success. A significant number of our students struggle with anxiety, autism, behavior challenges, and emotional dysregulation, often stemming from trauma, limited access to mental health support, and systemic inequities.

Despite these challenges, our students are resilient, bright, and full of potential.

They deserve a space where they feel seen, safe, and supported.

My Project

This project will help create a therapeutic counseling and sensory regulation space, a Safe Haven, designed specifically to meet the social-emotional, behavioral, and sensory needs of our students.

Our goal is to promote racial justice by building a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and equity-centered support room. This space will include:

Sensory tools (weighted blankets, fidget items, noise-canceling headphones, liquid flooring)

Therapeutic materials (mindfulness activities, SEL books representing diverse cultures, visuals in Spanish and English)

Comfortable furnishings (bean bags, rugs, calm colors)

Art and calming stations for students to regulate emotions safely

Culturally affirming decor that reflects and celebrates our Hispanic students’ identities and communities

This room will serve as a place where students can reset, regulate, and rebuild, whether it’s during a moment of emotional dysregulation, a therapy session, or a quiet break to avoid sensory overwhelm.
