Safe Enough to Learn

My Students

The majority of students that I service are students who, from an early age, have been diagnosed with some type of learning or emotional disabilities. Because of this, they may not be able to thrive in a general education classroom.

They come from various backgrounds which haven't been the best environment for the to grow up in.

Being forced to experience forms of trauma their disabilities begin to manifest themselves, causing students to lash out, sometimes violently. School is a place where most of them come not only to get an education, but to feel safe and get a peace of mind from the lives they live outside of the classroom.

My Project

Most of the students I service are students exposed to trauma, which makes it extremely difficult to regulate their emotions. Their emotions present themselves at times of frustration from not understanding the coursework to not being able to express themselves, to not being able to create and sustain substantial relationships with their peers. The behavior that manifests itself can be very disruptive to the learning environment. When this happens students lose rationale and are unable to regulate their emotions.

Having materials that they can depend on in times of frustrations makes the day a lot smoother for them to deal with.

These materials help them manage their stress level of even for a brief second. It helps.
