Safe Distance Seating for School 2020

Help me give my students floor cushions to sit on during whole classroom work that meets the regulations of social-distancing and sanitation.

My Students

Six- and seven-year-olds are at one of the most wonderful ages. They are eager to learn and curious about the world around them. While still figuring out how school and learning work, they begin to take ownership of their learning and to form lasting friendships with each other.

First grade is an essential year for learning to read and write.

Students learn how to dig into complex texts and become authors themselves. They learn strategies for reading and solving math problems and are able to choose the strategies that work best.

This school year, my students will learn about diversity, friendship, perseverance, and taking risks in their learning. They learn to set goals for themselves and to work hard to achieve them. Please consider supporting my students in their goals this year.

My Project

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the school may look very different from what most of us are accustomed to. Although we won't know exactly how classroom instruction will work this fall, one thing we do know is that students will be required to practice distancing in the classroom to some extent. In my district, those changes mean that students can't sit together on the large carpet for storytimes.

This project will provide my students with comfortable floor seating that will give them a sense of community even when they can't sit together on our class carpet.

In addition to providing distanced seating, these floor mats are easily sanitized, unlike traditional carpet. The handles on these mats will allow students to carry them around the room as needed. Each child will be assigned a floor mat that is their own, without sharing, and this mat will hang from a hook on the side of their desk to avoid cross-contamination during storage.

As a teacher, I can't wait to get back into my classroom this fall and to begin in-person instruction again. More important than ever is my responsibility to keep my students safe and healthy. Help us create a comfortable classroom where students can sit in ways that foster classroom community and togetherness even from a distance.
