This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My full time emotional support students are fortunate enough to have a de-escalation room where they can take time out of the classroom to assist with self-regulation when frustrated, upset, angry or overwhelmed. However, our mats that we currently have in this space are very outdated and no longer provide the inviting environment my students need to practice and implement calming and coping strategies.
This room is most needed when my students struggle to self-regulate their emotions, because academic learning immediately comes to a halt until they can appropriately calm themselves back to an emotional state where they are motivated and eager to get back to learning in the classroom.
Luckily, this room provides the space for my students to use on an as needed basis.
My goal for this project is to use these tiles to create a safe space that my students will be interested in using when calming strategies need to be utilized to help regulate their mood to a calmer state. My students are loving, caring, helpful, and smart children who just need some daily reminders to assist with the strong emotions that sometimes consume them.
