This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My kindergarten-5th grade students attend an inner city school where approximately 95% qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. A majority of my students are also English Language Learners. I love that I can transfer my passion for music to my students. Students are able to transfer their musical skills to their everyday lives and other academic areas, including, but not limited to: math, science, literacy, and social studies.
From the moment they enter my music room, they are focused on learning, participating and growing their knowledge in the world of music in the short 45 minutes of music class.
By creating a positive and inclusive learning culture, my goal is to support their love of learning and to play a positive influence in their appreciation for how music impact their everyday lives.
All of my students want to be in a classroom that would make them feel comfortable as well as included. When students came back to school post COVID-19, many of them struggled with anxiety and just fear about being in school. The items that I have selected will hopefully help them to feel this comfort in a safe space.
I would also like to expand their knowledge of various instruments as well as multicultural books from around the world. Students get very excited about using instruments in music class. Using instruments helps with motor development as well as cognitive development. They have to read rhythms as well as be able to keep the steady beat. When the students have the opportunity to use instruments they will leave my class feeling like they have accomplished great things.
