Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am requesting safe, wooden lockers for first grade children to hang their coats and bags in throughout the year. Safety is a paramount issue in any classroom, especially for those in younger grades. In my classroom we have big orange metal closets on wheels that were purchased in the 1970s when our school was last restructured. The closets are too big for my first graders to comfortably hang their coats and roll around dangerously when they step up to hang things. Also, and this is the worst, students find the closets a perfect refuge from the busy work of the classroom and have been known to lock themselves inside or, for a prank, lock their friends inside. They have a latch mechanism that I cannot disable, and banging doors that I cannot remove. I would dearly love to eliminate these safety hazards from our room and replace them with safe (no doors, latches or wheels), unobtrusive, space-saving lockers. While small, the lockers that I am requesting have an individual space for every child. Everyone would get their own coathook that they could label and use for the year. I have observed these lockers in action at other schools in the Bronx and noticed that this sense of ownership and responsibility is very important for first graders. They are also age and size appropriate, and have extra cubbie space for school supplies and winter boots. Both myself and my students, would really appreciate their valuable, safe addition to our room in the fall.
