This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Working in a 100-year old building, in a high needs/high poverty school can be challenging. After finding out that there is a significant amount of lead in the water flowing from our sinks, and water fountains, I decided that providing reusable water bottles to students would be helpful. We have one filtered water dispenser in the school serving over 350 students.

Lead in the water is nothing new to Oakland and many of our old pipes are leaking lead into our drinking water.

Students have always depended on our water fountains and sinks for drinking water. Now, the provision of reusable water bottles will not only prevent further lead contamination but will also save the environment from the overuse of one-time use plastic water bottles.

The goal of this project is to put reusable water bottles into the hands of as many students as possible. Students need to stay hydrated at school in order to improve their focus and attention. The stickers will be used so that students can more easily identify their water bottles. This project will potentially benefit at least two thirds of the students in our school. The water bottles will be part of our student-led campaign to educate the school, and the larger community about the need to provide safe, clean, lead-free water for all.
