Safe Area for Pre-K ASD Classroom

My students need a safe area of the classroom where they can engage in sensory tactics to help ease behaviors. These materials would create a break area where they could safely engage in such activities.

My Students

My classroom is made up of seven 3-5 year olds with a diagnosis of autism. I have two wonderful paraprofessionals in the classroom, as well. Each child is unique in their needs and how we service them. We are lucky to be housed in a school with a large special education community, servicing 17 ASD classrooms. We are a Title One school system that represents over 130 countries. Every student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that outlines their goals and service needs for the school year. As teachers, we must target each skill by differentiating our lesson plans by adapting materials and motivating and reinforcing our students based on their unique learning styles.

My Project

Our students engage in plethora of sensory-seeking behaviors to help them focus and appropriately attend to classroom routines. Our current classroom lacks the materials to create a safe place, as well as the tools to help ease any behaviors. Many students with autism seek sensory stimulation or are eager to reduce over-stimulization. The Relaxation Station would welcome these students in times of distress by providing an inviting and enclosed space.

The sensory-processing materials would assist in calming behaviors by providing the sensory input the children seek throughout the day.

Unfortunately we do not have access to weighted/pressure vests and I strongly believe some of our students would benefit from the sensory input. Additionally, many of our students have difficulty remaining seating during work centers and Circle Time. The block chairs would assist with those students by encouraging them to remain seated and attentive to the materials in front of them.

We strive to provide the best for our students and hope we can make the school day easier by providing a space for them to feel safe and to have access to materials that would better their daily routine.
