My Students

I teach at a middle school in Northeast Philadelphia. It includes grades 6th-8th. At my school, we have a diverse population. We sit at 36% of our population being students who are identified with special needs. Our school consists of inclusion classrooms, as well as four self-contained classes. We have an advisory class when the entire population is integrated with each other.

My school has transitioned to a project-based learning school using STEM, to better prepare our students to be global-minded citizens in this world.

We want to teach them the "newfangled" 21st Century skills that are necessary to survive in the world today. In our quest, we are making our classrooms more student-friendly, welcoming and comfortable.

My Project

The students in my self-contained Emotional Support classroom are very protective of their items: educational games, headphones, white boards, markers, art supplies, etc. We have a very caring climate in our building and allow for students and staff to borrow items from our room. Our students get upset when there is no one in the classroom and items get borrowed, because items do not always get returned and we have no track of where they have disappeared to in the building.

When my students feel that the class belongings and items are secured when they are not in the room, leaves them at peace when they are out of the room.

The students can be very protective of what is in the classroom and like to make sure everything is cared for because they appreciate what we do have from the staff purchasing classroom materials, as well as what has been funded through other projects.
