This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We want books! We want books! Please answer the 8th Grade outcry and help me fill my classroom library!
My students are, in a word, amazing.
They are predominately low-income and 100% minority students. In many cases, they have seen gang violence, guns, drugs, and the true effect of illiteracy and poverty. In spite of their many challenges, they are excited to learn. Their school used to be one of the most challenged schools in the county, but they are now a school on the rise. Its API score has nearly doubled over the past few years. These students are hungry for knowledge and need the resources to continue on their current path toward high school and beyond.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of age-appropriate books in order to fill my classroom bookshelf. I have selected a range of genres and topics so that all of my students will be able to find something of interest. Sustained Silent Reading is an established period of time at my school on Monday-Thursday. This time can only be valuable for the students if they are enjoying what they are reading. The opportunity to provide them with such books as Harry Potter, Number the Stars, and Nancy Drew would make this goal a reality.
Illiteracy is a terrifying issue throughout the country, especially in neighborhoods like the one that my school is in, which is why it is so vital to inspire my students to find the joy in reading.
With a strong student library, this can easily become a reality.
