Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul", so said poet Alfred Austin. We want our students to build and nurture a salsa pallet garden, packaging & marketing the salsa.

My students attend one of the oldest middle schools in a semi-rural town in Arizona.

Even though we have a major city close by, most of my students have never gone there. My students face numerous challenges on a daily basis; many come from lower income homes that are struggling to get by, let alone worry about education. My job is to inspire kids to become scientists, to dream big, and that with an education there is nothing they can't do. My greatest joy is to talk to a kid who didn't like science before tell me how much he loves it now, and that they are now starting to expand on experiments we've done in class at home.

My Project

One of the goals of our STEM Academy is to provide projects that have a real world community application. Pallets and PVC pipe have been donated for students to start a salsa garden. We need soil, shade, and seeds in order to get started. Students will grow the vegetables and herbs needed for the production of salsa. Once the crop is harvested, students will research and produce different salsa recipes for product testing. Once the perfect recipe is found, students will bottle the salsa. They will then market and sell the salsa, calculating the per bottle cost and pricing it at a profitable price. All profits will be poured back into the salsa garden in order to maintain it.

Kids love doing hands-on projects.

Most kids have never had an opportunity to garden, let alone raise a garden from scratch. Imagine the how the students will act when they feast on their salsa and chips from their own garden. Students who garden learn valuable lessons in sustainability, the environment, and of course science and math.
