S for Supplies, R for Resources = Student Readiness
My students need writing utensils, sheet protectors, dry eraser markers, scissors and other essential back-to-school supplies necessary for hands-on learning and mastery of a college-readiness curriculum.
Our students are ready and willing to take on the challenges of common core mathematics content. They have many diverse styles of learning and need to experience mathematics beyond the traditional lecture. They need exposure to 21st Century learning resources and higher-order thinking materials. They need to collaborate with their peers and learn how to take the lead during mathematics discourse. Research has shown that long-term memory is enhanced through simulations of the real experiences. So let's give them real world experiences in math!
We are 95% African-American, 2% Haitian-American, 2% Hispanic and 1% Caucasian with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Our school is located in the inner city of Miami, Florida. Although, our students are faced with many socio-economic challenges, they seek a high quality education to become productive citizens.
My Project
Using sheet protectors and dry erase markers, our students will build math fluency through repeated practice of solving basic math facts. The sheet protectors will eliminate waste of copy paper as students will be able to preserve and use the same worksheets.
The pens, pencils, and sharpeners will ensure that our students are ready to learn upon arrival.
The colored pencils and scissors are needed resources for completing the tasks in their interactive math notebooks.
All of these resources will help our teachers reduce the barrier of students not having the proper tools for completing their classwork and/or homework. This aids in maximizing the use of instructional time.
