My Project

The first studio day students have access to the pottery wheels, they are rushing in my door to claim their favorite wheel. Students who, on other days, or in other classes, show up late because they are roaming the hallways getting into trouble or aren't interested in class. I have students in my high school ceramics room receiving their last educational experience in fine art or their first big spark that leads them down creative paths. I have students who have mostly adapted classes besides my ceramics class and gifted students whose other classes are all advanced placement. Either way, I strive to make their experience memorable and enriching, engaging them in a hands on, dusty, dirty, messy, but rewarding clay studio. It is a beautiful sight to see students come alive.

Wheels are essential to this experience, and a reason for a lot of students to open themselves up to the hard work and perseverance required of learning to throw on the wheel.

The skills they gain from working on the pottery wheel move far beyond fine art and into their character development that will last their lifetime. This experience cannot be duplicated in a typical classroom with pencil and paper, ipads and screens.

Right now, I can only give my Ceramics 1 classes two weeks on the wheel. Splitting each class into three groups, they take turns, switching groups each week until everyone has been on the wheel for two full weeks.

Our ceramics program is growing rapidly and I have more students in Ceramics 2 and Ceramics 3 next year. In order to keep developing their skills and provide them the opportunity to work in such a rewarding way in their short time as high school students, we need more wheels in our classroom!
