Help me give my students vertical garden planters and other supplies for our new greenhouse project. They will utilize cross-curricular learning through science, math, writing, and agriculture for Pre-K to 12th grade students in our rural school.
HELP OUR RESOURCEFUL STUDENTS IMPLEMENT A GREENHOUSE PROJECT FOR SELF-SUSTAINABILITY. We hope to accomplish further development of a multi-age greenhouse (already on-site) for science, math, environmental, agriculture, and self-sustainability purposes. Our students are from a rural setting in Wyoming. As such, they are very resourceful in coming up with creative ways of accomplishing a project or goal.
We have nourished this creative spirit in our Genius Hour projects that take place on Fridays.
Students come together in multi-age groups to brainstorm, plan, and carry out projects and foster creativity.
While not having the same access to resources that a large school may have, these kids have managed to harness what the DO have and win some exciting contests. Examples include the Verizon App Challenge (where they won $10,000 for first place in the nation), the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow state contest ($20,000) and became 1 of 15 finalist schools (out of 4,000) on the national level. They have also placed in the top 10 in National FFA contests of various types.
My Project
We have time set aside on Fridays for creative, hands-on, inter-age projects in a greenhouse recently obtained through a grant. Students will use the supplies to plan the layout and execute goals for project-based learning, science fair projects/studies, agriculture projects/studies, school food items, and flowers for school events. Master gardeners, County Extension Agents, local business people, Weed and Pest, Conservation District and others can be consulted for a community-based approach. Success will be measured through the amount of produce grown, presentation of science fair projects, and increased consumption of fruits and vegetables by our students. Research shows that students are more likely to consume what they grow.
