My Students
Do you remember that first book you read as a kid that changed you as a person? That first book that immediately pulled you into its world and taught you about yourself and life? Or maybe the book that inspired you to be a better person or to pursue your dreams in life?
Many of my students have not experienced the joy that a good book can bring. Being a rural area school, many of my students lack access to technology and books. Family obligations and after school jobs also limit my students' abilities to explore books that will widen their horizons and introduce them to new viewpoints and perspectives outside of their small, outdoorsy community. I want to show them that those books are out there, waiting to be explored!
My Project
I teach in a rural area where my students do not have proper access to a wide variety of books, especially those that are told from different perspectives. Our school doesn't even have a library for students to find the perfect book. Because of this, many of the students do not see the importance of reading and do as little reading as possible.
I want to teach my students that reading isn't just a chore - it can be a fun outlet that not only brings them to new places, but can also teach them about themselves and the world they live in.
I hope to improve the literacy of the students at my school, and help them make better decisions regarding the world they live in, by providing a library filled with high interest and diverse books!
