Help me give my students an opportunity to keep working while being able to burn off some extra energy with an under-desk treadmill and a standing desk!
I am a full-time teacher, but for half of the day, I help students in my position as Behavior Coach. Students are sent to me when they get upset or are demonstrating behavior that is interfering with their learning or the learning of others. We have a large percentage of students in the low-income range. We also have a high mobility rate at our school.
My role is to work with these students and to get them the support they need to be successful.
The goal is for them to be able to return to their classrooms as soon as possible. Our school has approximately 200 students, and the number of students I see varies. I see students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
My Project
Our school day is set up to address students' academic needs. There are opportunities that are scheduled throughout the day for students to have breaks and to have the chance to move. They go to p.e. and recess everyday. Sometimes, however, kids need to move at other times during the day. Those unscheduled times come up throughout the day. A standing desk and under desk treadmill would allow students to keep working while releasing energy.
Having a desk/treadmill will allow the students the chance to burn off some energy when they need it, instead of at scheduled times.
As a Behavior Coach, I often walk with students to help channel their energy so they can return to class. With a stand-up desk and walking treadmill, I can help the students to keep working while also providing them an opportunity to release some energy and help them self regulate when they are feeling anxious, scared, or depressed. Research shows that physical exercise actually helps stimulate the brain and helps with thinking. This desk/treadmill set up would not only help with releasing energy, but it will also help them self regulate when they are feeling those strong emotions that interfere with learning.
