My students need water bottles and pedometers to help them reach their running goals and be more confident and successful in the classroom.

My Students
Most of my students come from high poverty environments and have never had the opportunity to participate in an organized sport. The experience of a team sport is new to most of my students. During our Mustang Stampede Running Club, my students are able to learn how to set meaningful goals and work together to become stronger and healthier. This is an open club for 4th - 6th graders and no one is turned away because of their inexperience or lack of ability.
Please, can we do just one more lap?
It's not often that a coach hears this from their students, but with our amazing kids, it's a routine request! Our first year was a 4 week season with just 15 students, but we continue to grow and will have 45 students running for 5 months this season. They meet twice a week after school to RUN - around the school, at the park, around the neighborhood. They learn how to push themselves farther than ever before and how to work towards a common goal. As they increase their stamina, their confidence also increases. This new confidence spills over into their classroom performance.
My Project
Supplies such as water bottles and pedometers will give our after school running club students the chance to participate in a group activity that emphasizes physical fitness, along with personal and team goal setting. Tracking their weekly mileage with the pedometers will help them to practice setting realistic goals and work toward achieving them. Having water bottles close at hand for every student will keep them hydrated and healthy in the warm Arizona sun.
Setting and achieving their physical activity goals will help our students be more confident about themselves and their abilities.
As our students' confidence on the field grows, it will have a positive impact on all parts of their lives and education. The healthy habits that our students learn now in running club will help them to lead better lives and make wise health decisions as they get older.
