Remember when we were 12 years old and playing flag football was just like breathing? My students have learned many new sports, but they haven't played football yet!
My 6th grade students are wonderful!
I teach in a rural community K-6 elementary school. This year, I have tried teaching organized PE. instead of recess and they have loved it! They are really energetic and are enjoying what we feel are the most important lessons to be learned from sports: sportsmanship, teamwork, fitness, and fun! I have seen them grow from a conglomeration of cliques to a cohesive team. They all really like each other and have a great time playing together.
My Project
I am requesting 10 composite footballs and 2 sets of flag belts in green and blue. If we have these materials, we will be able to play flag football for PE. I will teach them how to properly throw the ball, catch it, and all of the other skills that go with a successful game of flag football. They will be able to experience all of the skill, strategy, and teamwork that the game of football has to offer. Flag football is perfect for my PE. class. It will get my students up and running around and give them an opportunity to learn a wonderful sport!
One of the reasons I am so passionate about teaching PE.
is that 1 in 4 kids today are at risk for childhood obesity. We have played other games, but there is something about football that will appeal to my students, especially the boys. I hope to engage them in a new sport that they can play together.
