My students need Pedometers to individualize their learning. Pedometers will keep track of their mileage, activity time, and calories burned during Walking and Running Club.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I created an after school Walking and Running club for my 3rd through 6th grade students. They get to stay at school for an extra hour to learn about the benefits of cardiovascular fitness, long distance running, track and field, and caloric burn.
This extra hour at school not only keeps them active and learning, but safe.
Many of these kids go home to empty houses. I want to create extra, supervised learning time for them with real-world resources and equipment.
I teach at a Title I school in Arizona where 90 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students have the potential to achieve dreams in the athletic world. However due to the fees of sports clubs and teams, and the costs of fitness training and private coaches, most of my students will never get the chance to harness their potential. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.
My Project
The pedometers will bridge the gap between technology and physical activity. They bring academic learning, specifically math, into Physical Education. They are a motivational factor in the learning of and staying involved in physical activity. These Pedometers will teach my students how to calculate a baseline step count personalized to their goals. The pedometers will assist students in counting the miles they accumulate at Walking and Running Club practice. They will teach students about Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA). The pedometers will also keep track of calories burned, teaching students about calorie intake vs outtake. The pedometers will allow me to teach that students may individualized success in physical activity, rather than always have one winner or a wining team.
