Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school serves students coming from lower income families. Most are on free lunch and lack physical activity. I teach 5th grade students and serve them in all subject areas. The majority of the students I will be teaching this coming school year are somewhat over weight. I also observed that during their recess most students sat on the benches. Sustained physical activity was lacking most days. During the Run and Jump for Heartbeeps Project, students in my classroom will set their own sustained physical activity (SPA) goals. For example, the student might decide that by the end of the school year they will run/walk 100 miles or maybe jump 10 minutes a day 3 times a week. Once students have set their goals they will use the jump ropes, school track or hula hoops to help themselves sustain physical activity (SPA). Monthly goals will be set and rewarded based on goals achieved or effort made. Those students that decide not to run or jump will have access to hula hoops for sustained physical activity (SPA). The use of jump ropes, hula hoops, and Frisbee will increase physical activity and heartbeeps. My students will be on the road to better health. You can help boost the heartbeeps of these 5th grade students by providing jump ropes, hula hoops, and a Frisbee to help Sustain Physical Activity (SPA).
