With the rugs, we can engage in fun group activities while sitting down. Music can be taught in a variety of ways especially when you are teaching the basics to elementary students. One of the hardest things to teach a musician is how to communicate with one another while playing music. Even my older students find a very difficult time meeting the same tempo let alone follow the same rhythm. By implementing the rugs, my students can sit closer to each other and achieve a better connection that cannot be achieved if sitting on chairs where they are more distant and situated into their own little bubble. It prevents their knees and bodies from bruising and also comes in handy for covering up the dirty floor. After all, elementary kids are infamous for creating a biggest messes. Other than that, I must admit that the rugs do take out the dull and boring feel of the room. It adds color that should be seen more often in little kid classrooms.
This project benefits my students along with my classroom because it allows us to perform exercises that do not use chairs.
My elementary music class almost never implements chairs because my students are standing up, moving, and engaging in activities. The rugs will be helpful not just for one class but for the other 8+ music classes I teach in that classroom. This also applies with the future students I will have next year and the year after that and so on.
