The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities. I am searching for new and exciting materials to motivate all of my students to be as successful as possible.
My students come in ready to learn, and know that our classroom is a safe place to make mistakes, learn from them, and that they will never be judged on their abilities or disabilities.
With these qualities, they help each other learn and grow into better learners, friends and citizens. They know that they will receive the support and trust of myself and the paraprofessionals inside our classroom.
My classroom is compiled of an amazing group of learners that just happen to have multiple disabilities. In addition to having multiple disabilities, my students also come from low income homes. While there are several factors working against them, they come to school each day ready to learn. It is proven that children learn new words as they read. Subconsciously, they absorb information on how to structure sentences and how to use words and other language features effectively in their writing and speaking. A new reading corner with a rug for students to sit on, bean bag chairs for students to relax in, a table and lamp would encourage our students sit down, get comfy and enjoy reading. By reading our hope is that each child will understand that reading is its own reward.
"My kids" want to be successful and work very hard to achieve their goals.
The differences in learning styles and varying abilities require a lot of differentiation in instruction. They are learning what is considered typical middle school content; however, the average reading level for my class is second grade. My goal is to provide them with a learning environment that encourages both social and academic success.
