Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My favorite quote (featured at the end of my email sign-off) is "Teachers who love teaching, teach children to love learning." My goal for every students is to instill a love of learning through comfortable reading space and interesting reading materials.
My students are often thrilled to receive reading material they are able to keep, because many of them don't have books of their own.
Our school is a Title I school, with more than 75% of the kids on free or reduced lunch. My school is old but charming, with the right personal touches in the classroom it becomes a space where students feel safe and enjoy learning.
My Project
The rug would be utilized in our classroom library and reading area. Here there would be cozy chairs, pillows, and a calming little lamp all surrounded by books from all genres. The rug will not only look appealing and comfortable for students, it will section off that area of the room to be used primarily for reading.
The Scholastic News magazines I am requesting are an engaging way for students to learn about what is going on in the world around them while increasing their reading comprehension. This past year, I was happy to receive a trial issue and my students and I loved reading the issue and learning from it. I was able to use the issue for a variety of activities, following the helpful teachers guide, with lessons to address the needs of all types of learners. This magazine incorporates art, music, drama and more. We also used the articles to practice summarizing. The students loved putting on a "news reporter" jacket and fedora to read their summarized news report.
The donations to this proposal will help me reach my goal of instilling a love of learning in all students.
They will have an opportunity to read and learn in a comfortable space, and the wonderful opportunity of reading news articles to stay informed; with information written on their reading level.
