Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am requesting a large 142 in. (width) x 140 in. (length) plush thick dark colored rug (preferably blue) for my classroom. The rug doesn't have to be this exact size, but it is preferable. I am a third grade public school teacher in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. My school is a high needs school with many students coming from subsidized homes.
Our curriculum requires that we do the majority of teaching instruction with students sitting on a rug. The idea behind this is to create a comfortable intimate environment for students. For the past two years, I have had a thin rug for students to sit upon which is very dirty and uncomfortable. The students spend about four or five hours a day on the rug, and I feel they deserve a thick, comfortable rug that can be easily cleaned. This rug must accommodate 23 children comfortably (sitting cross-legged).
The rug will be placed in front of the classroom library, and my goal is to create a cozy, comfortable, clean and accessible space to foster reading as well as other academic skills. As most New York City schools require teachers to have rugs in their classroom, this rug will be used daily and for as many years as possible. All of my students (currently 23) will use the rug, as well as students from any after-school programs or activities.
The rug is part of the balanced literacy curriculum which encourages a comfortable, safe, and clean environment in which students learn literacy skills, as well as the other subject areas. Many times my students request to sit at their desks because the rug is dirty and uncomfortable. I would love to see them see the rug as an inviting place to sit back, listen and learn!
