My Students

The students in our school come from low income neighborhoods, and many are not native English Speakers. More than half of our 4th grade students do not read on grade level and need a lot of support with reading fluency and comprehension. Some of the students in my class have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, autism, or learning disorders and struggle to stay focused in class.

These students struggle academically and need support to help them reach their goals and become better students.

My Project

Students all over struggle with developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Hands-on activities have been shown to increase motivation. When students are able to physically hold onto something and manipulate it, they are more likely to be invested in the concept and have a desire to understand the concept being taught.

By twisting and turning the parts of a Rubik's Cube, students can grasp important math concepts including area, perimeter, volume, angles, and algorithms, as well as many other critical concepts.

Rubik's Cube activities can also help to teach life lessons and 21st century skills such as following directions, memorization, sequencing, focusing, and perseverance.

We will be using the Rubik's Cube to develop all of these critical skills which these students may be lacking due to school closures due to COVID-19.
