Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

I teach math RTI and I see grades K-5 everyday. This means that the students I work with are below grade level so we spend a lot of time on foundational math skills. Without the foundations they cannot understand the big concepts. I like to incorporate a lot of hands on activities and manipulatives in the classroom. My kids are in need of new manipulatives as the ones we have are old and starting to fall apart.

My students love touching and working with manipulatives that let them see what their brains are doing.

This helps them make those tricky math connections. In particular my students love to use dice to help them create their own math problems. The older students will be able to use the 20 sided dice to make complicated math problems. We are a stem school and I am trying to implement more stem in my math class. The Legos and magnetic tiles will help in this area as well as in geometry.

My students are appreciative of anything that I bring into the classroom because they know that it will help them succeed in math. Having a wide variety of manipulatives in the classroom will allow my students to learn and grow in math and meet the needs of a diverse population of kids.
