I have found the secret to teaching great math lessons- clear learning targets, quality curriculum and instruction, and a little fun boost.
In math in fifth grade, students are taught in the Kingdom of Mathematica, by a queen (with an accent and everything)!
Students are able to raise themselves in the hierarchy, from commoner, lowly status, up to honorary king and queen. It's a lot of work, but the hierarchy ceremonies are exciting, as are the changes in titles and the tokens of achievement.
Fifth grade is a land of contradictions: students are in their final year of elementary school, the curriculum is challenging, but they are still, in essence, children; they love play and pretend even at the old age of ten. Having this hierarchy and the small tokens of achievement incentive the students to work at every level of math. They know they will be rewarded. Once they "go up" in the hierarchy, the title changes, as do their tokens. For example, after passing one unit of math, students go from being lowly commoners to being Ladies and Knights (titled Lady and Sir, respectfully) and during the ceremony are granted rings. After passing the next unit, those ladies and knights become Masters and Mistresses, granted necklaces, and the system continues up to Honorary King and Queen!
This is great fun and a nice break from the difficult and challenging amount of math the students are learning; they are able to celebrate themselves individually and together as they reach new levels of learning!
