In my classroom, students are on a math hierarchy where all students begin as commoners. As they gain different academic goals in their math class, they go up the hierarchy. Each time this occurs, their title changes and they undergo a royal hierarchy knighting where they are given a token of their achievement. These tokens may seem silly, but students love becoming "Sirs/Ladies," "Dukes/Duchesses," "Princes/Princesses" within their math class (where they are also only referred to by their new titles) and they cherish their tokens of achievement. Tokens begin small (rings) and go all the way up to crowns (when they become honorary kings and queens). This from of ranking in math achievement combines a love for fun and engagement with high expectations for math.
