My Students

My students are bright eyed and curious. They are awed by the study of new cultures and societies that differ from their own. Many of my students haven't ventured outside the city limits of Chicago and I've found that I am opening their minds by exposing them to other places in the world.

The work that takes place in my Social Studies class compliments the work they do in English class.

Because of this, I believe that a novel study would not only increase their capacity as readers, but as globally aware citizens.

My Project

Students will spend six weeks reading Amal Unbound. While reading, students will analyze the setting, plot, and themes of the book. Students will read independently and with peers capitalizing on the learning that takes place when students engage in thought-provoking discussion.

Not only will Amal Unbound help build my student's capacity as readers, but it will also widen their global perspective and sensitize them to different cultures.

Amal Unbound is a nice juxtaposition between the lives of my students and the characters in the book. By reading about the struggles and persistence in Amal Unbound, my students will learn more about themselves and their capacity to overcome challenges as well.
