This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazingly resilient. Despite the challenges of living in a city that is unaffordable to the average family, they come to school every day eager to learn---with huge smiles. My students are not only dealing with frustrations of struggling in school, but also, trauma exposure, poverty, and the challenges of Latino in an immigrant-unfriendly time; my students are up against unbelievable odds.
My students love learning and are so eager to become bilingual.
90% of my students qualify for the state free lunch program. Those that do not live in the projects surrounding our school often live in homeless shelters. Our school is a safe place for my students, and because of this, I want a safe, clean environment for them to learn.
My Project
Currently, our tables look like they are from the 1970s. I'm all for recycling and reuse, but the wobbly scratched tables need to go!
A welcome, organized space is so important for learning and these tables will help tie my room together and spark the cooperative spirit.
My school is currently working on creating spaces where students engage with peers in discussion in order to build meaning and create new knowledge. In my classroom, you will see students working on problems and then sharing them with their peers in order to compare and contrast strategies. For example, we use teaching through problem-solving (TTPS) where a problem will be posted for students to solve. They will work individually on the problem and then team together to discuss how they solved it. A few students with different approaches will then model their work in front of the class and the class will ask clarifying questions. Having these round tables will help build this Socratic learning environment.
