Rounding Out Our Room

My students need a carpet to organize themselves, headphones for our technology, and a karaoke machine to use when sharing stories and writing with the class.

My Students

My students are ready to learn when they come in the room! There is excitement for the day and lots of stories to tell as we gather on the floor to learn and share our stories and writings. I hope they each feel comfortable sharing with the group as we continue to learn and grow in Kindergarten!

We live in a suburban area of a major South Carolina city and are fortunate to have many opportunities around us for exploring!

My kindergarten students have parents that value experiences and my students love sharing what they have done with their families around town or just over the weekend. These experiences are what will make lasting memories for these children and will be connections to the learning they do in school.

My Project

The materials listed in this grant are to help round out the materials we already have so we can bridge the home experiences to those in the classroom. Our carpet is a place we will use to gather on each and every day to have large group discussions and lessons--this is where students can listen to stories from books and other students. The karaoke machine is simply so we can hear them! If you have ever been around young children, you will understand how hard it is for them to project their voices when in the spotlight! And finally, the headphones are for the computers, ipads, and listening centers. Those are the places the students make text to self connections as they listen to stories via CDs, apps, or websites. I can almost see a child listening to a Pete the Cat book on CD and then hear him say, "Pete the Cat plays baseball? So do I! I'll write a story about baseball!" Then that child can share his story with the karaoke machine while we sit on the carpet to listen. That is cool!

By helping us "round out" our classroom with a few more important items, it gives us a chance to simply make more connections.

Those connections are what cement learning in our brains. As we connect to each other through listening, stories, writing, and storytelling, these students will build up what I think of as a library of words and memories to refer back to as they move forward with their own reading and writing. It is a giant mental web we are weaving through simple materials.
