Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As part of the freshman curriculum, we have a unit on empathy and biases that is anchored by the award-winning novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. Class discussions have centered around lack of adequate housing, education, healthcare, and food on Native American reservations. We learned in our unit that the average Native American on a reservation sometimes only has one meal a day, and that their housing lacks adequate water, electricity, and heat supply. Students were tasked with a research project, and they identified housing and homelessness as a human rights issues. Realizing there are limited resources to help this population in our own backyard due to systemic roadblocks, they wanted to take action. Through their research, they have discovered the work of Amistad Catholic Workers (non-profit) who have created The Rossette Village, prefabricated tiny houses to house the unhoused.
The goal of this project is to provide breakfast food, essential supplies, and care packages to the unhoused population (and their pets) living behind the Amistad Catholic Worker house in New Haven, CT, offering them respite and support.
Once we get our supplies, we will organize an assembly day where students come together to sort and pack donated items. They will also be including personalized notes of encouragement and kindness in each package.
Assigned tasks to students, will include packing, labeling, and organizing the packages. After delivery, we will reflect as a class on the impact of the project, discussing what was learned and how it can be continued or improved upon in the future. Students will not only be addressing immediate needs but also fostering compassion and understanding in their community.
