I teach seventh and eighth grade math and science at Community Junior High School 145 in the Bronx. The student population is 1,622. Forty-seven percent of the students are female and fifty-three percent are male. Sixty percent of the students are Hispanic and thirty-six percent are Black. Ninety percent of the students are eligible for free lunch. I want my students to be life-long learners and readers. For graduation, I would like to give each of the students in my homeroom class a copy of Rose that Grew from Concrete by Tupac Shakur. Shakur was the son of a Black Panther and a controversial and successful rapper. The book is a collection of his poetry before he became famous. The poems are passionate and depict the complexities of Shakur's character. They also reveal his sentiments towards the injustices that exist in America. Many of the students embrace Tupac Shakur because of his honesty and charisma. His story and life represent the struggle that many of my kids can relate to. His life also shows how he was able to overcome many obstacles such as drugs, poverty and violence. I have 32 students in my homeroom class. I would like to give a copy to each of them for graduation.
