Roots of Resilience: Plants for a Healthier, Happier School

My Project

Plants in the library and for students to take home can provide a powerful source of calm and connection in the high-stress environment of high school. Studies show that exposure to greenery can significantly reduce stress levels, improve mood, and increase a sense of well-being.

By bringing plants into the library, students gain access to a peaceful, nature-infused atmosphere that can serve as a much-needed retreat during their day.

This green space could also inspire mindfulness practices and focus, making the library not only a place of study, but a space to recharge. The presence of plants, with their calming colors and natural aesthetics, has been shown to lower blood pressure, decrease feelings of anxiety, and improve cognitive performance, giving students a better chance to succeed academically and emotionally.

Sending plants home with students extends these benefits to their personal lives, offering a piece of that peaceful environment beyond school walls. Taking care of a plant encourages responsibility and can foster a sense of accomplishment, both of which are beneficial for mental health. For many, plants become symbolic of growth, resilience, and patience—qualities that are essential during adolescence. In addition, the act of nurturing a living thing can provide comfort and reduce feelings of isolation, helping students to feel more grounded and supported.

By integrating plants into the school and home environments, this project would create lasting positive effects on student well-being, supporting mental health in a practical, impactful way.
