My Project

Project Overview

In our classroom, we believe every child deserves to see themselves reflected in their learning; the small journal books will allow the children and their families to create their own identity book, showcasing their culture and family.

I seek support to create a learning environment rich in diverse books, cultural materials, and identity-based activities that help students explore and celebrate who they are. This project will empower children to embrace their racial and cultural identities while learning to appreciate the uniqueness of others.

My students are brilliant, bold, and beautifully diverse. They come from various racial and cultural backgrounds and live in a low-income urban community where resources can be limited but the potential is limitless. Many are navigating the early stages of understanding who they are in a world that doesn’t always affirm them.

With your support, I hope to provide:

Culturally responsive picture books that center BIPOC authors, characters, and traditions

Diverse classroom dolls and toys that reflect various skin tones, abilities, and backgrounds

Materials for self-portrait and identity projects (mirrors, multicultural skin-tone crayons and paper, craft supplies)

Family engagement materials to bring students’ cultural traditions into the classroom

These resources will be woven into literacy lessons, social-emotional activities, and family projects to affirm students' identities and foster respect for others.

Why Identity Work Matters

In a low-income community, students often face social messages that minimize or ignore their cultural and racial identities. When children don’t see themselves in their curriculum, it sends a harmful message about whose stories matter. This project works to disrupt that narrative.

It fosters a strong sense of belonging and community. Research shows that culturally responsive teaching improves academic outcomes, increases engagement, and strengthens student-teacher relationships—especially for children of color.
