My Students

I teach in a Title I school in Wilmington, NC. My classroom includes 18 second-graders who love learning. We spend our days learning in a variety of ways and integrating literacy throughout. Several of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and our school population was heavily affected by Hurricane Florence, including 18 missed school days. I love that despite all of these unfortunate circumstances, my students have bounced back and have come back to school more eager to learn than ever.

My Project

These read aloud books will allow me to model fluent reading for my students while supporting them in higher order thinking skills. These books are from a variety of different genres and many have earned literary awards. Many of my students are not being read to at home so the only opportunity they have to experience quality literature is at school.

Our school system also missed 18 days of learning due to Hurricane Florence.

Many of our families were severely affected because of the storm and many of our students are still going through difficult times. These read alouds will help me teach my students how reading can take one's mind on an adventure away from the circumstances surrounding one.
