Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are engaged and excited about the adventures they will have in 1st grade! The students at my school each come in with varying backgrounds both culturally and academically. Students come to school with an inquisitive mind ready to be filled with new experiences.
My school community and neighborhood are very inviting, engaged and supportive.
Although parents are unable to volunteer, due to their many jobs, they are always willing to take time to talk about their child's progress and how they can help at home. Students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch due to the economic standings of many of our families.
My Project
Reading and phonics change the lives of my first graders every year. Their reading becomes stronger and stronger. Next year will be a year of new learning for both the students and myself. We will be implementing the Lucy Calkins Reading and Phonics Workshops. I had the opportunity to pilot both this year and the results were very successful! Students were understanding spelling patterns, picking up good reading habits, and becoming word detectives. My students were engaged in reading noticing when their was a problem in what they read and stopping to fix it up right away. In another unit, they learned the many vowel teams in order to do this hard reading and decoding.
These materials will give my students the tools to become word detectives, word builders and the opportunity to take their reading adventures home with them.
These materials will help organize my classroom for my first graders in this new curriculum. I want to give them little notebooks so as we are working on the mystery of silent e they can take notes as they are finding silent e in their books. I want to bring words to life by building words with unifix cubes and noticing patterns. I want my students to be able to bring their reading adventures home with them in their own book bag.
