My Project
Roosevelt is trying to create a walking club that encourages students to be active. In the morning students come into the gym and walk laps before school. We want to turn this into a school wide activity and learning opportunity for understanding distance and geography. We will calculate the students' steps counted by the pedometers. Older grades will create a conversion key and calculate the distances from city to city. Younger students will put and move the footsteps on a community bulletin board so other students can see their progress. Students can follow their footsteps from Roosevelt to other locations on a US map! As an incentive students will receive prizes when they reach different cities.
For example, students will start in Tacoma WA at Roosevelt, as they walk and accumulate steps their footprint on the bulletin board will move closer to Spokane WA.
Once their footprint reaches Spokane WA the students will receive a prize but there will also flip up a flap on the bulletin board for the city and learn a bit more about the city they have reached. There will also be a learning opportunity for the historical relevance as they follow the path of many historical figures. For example, the Salma to Montgomery March will create an opportunity for students to engage with topics of social justice and racial equity. Students will also have short stops where they can learn about indigenous lands and cultures on their way across the USA.
Roosevelt's Walking Club will create opportunities for students to learn more about the USA history and different places in America.
