My Project
Our elementary STEM labs are a space where learners engineer and design solutions for the real world through experience indoors and outdoors. When young people have the chance to plant, water, fertilize, and grow their own food at school they make connections with the world around them. This project pairs well with the Service Stars mission of February, "Speak Out.
Help our students learn life skills that can be easily transferred from the classroom to their homes, communities, and beyond!
The soil and garden beds requested in this DonorsChoose project will give our learners the space to grow edible and seasonally appropriate foods that will yield additional seeds that can be taken home and into the community and shared with neighbors and friends for years to come in an effort to help interested individuals grow their own food.
Studying the life cycle of a plant from seed to harvest aligns with classroom science standards in elementary school exceptionally well. The STEM labs are a place where students have the time to make these connections by learning about soil, soil amendments, various seeds, nutrient requirements of plants, container gardening, helpful and harmful garden residents and visitors, seasons, the sun, weather, living things, nutrition, caring for living things, feeding oneself, community service, and much more!
Filling our garden spaces with clean soil that is optimal for plant growth helps keep students engaged, as it's most likely the plants will grow quickly and with good form when conditions for growth are ideal. We are fortunate to have local farmers and garden clubs that have generously committed to contributing the seeds and plants that will fill these garden beds once installed. Your support goes directly to providing the soil and garden spaces to make this project possible for our nearly 1,200 elementary students.
