Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students: "Keep calm and let them play." This is one of the many "Keep Calms" that have become so popular. It is one of my favorites because it reminds me that young children learn most effectively in a happy, nurturing environment.

I teach at a rather small suburban elementary school located deep in southern California, and the culture of the surrounding region influences my teaching style.

Most of the students walking through the door on their first day aren't just coming to kindergarten for the first time. For most of them, this is their first time in a school setting. Most of my students are between the ages of 4 and 5, and this, coupled with them being new to schooling, means they need a different kind of "touch." In order to provide the best environment for my little ones the kids must feel comfortable, and this type of atmosphere is possible due to the wonderful parent volunteers I am blessed with. More often than not I have 2 or 3 volunteers. These parents aren't just a blessing to the class, they are also a blessing to me. They help remind me that the most important part of what I do is cultivating relationships with my students and their parents so that they will have the tools needed to succeed.

My Project

The majority of our learning day is spent in 15 minute rotations. One is taught by me, one is taught by my partner teacher, and the remaining three are guided by our parent and grandparent volunteers. This style of learning is exactly what my young students need. They learn well in short periods of guided instruction and learning exploration. They stay focused and engaged for the entire rotation. When the timer rings to signal the end of the rotation the children quickly tidy up and return to the carpet eager and ready to begin their next learning adventure, or job, as they call it. Young children thrive on routine and structure and my learning environment gives that to them. I would love to provide my little sweeties with more access to technology than our school budget can provide. After Christmas we received our first classroom iPad through Donors Choose. I would love to be able to double my students' time on the iPad with by adding another.

The children of today will be adults in a future that we can barely imagine.

It is our responsibility to expose them to different technology, allowing them to become masters of it. I want each child to leave my class with the same enthusiasm and love for learning with which they entered. My dream is that they will graduate from high school with their enthusiasm and love of learning intact.
