My Students

Do you remember feeling frustrated when you learned how to read? In our class, frustration is not associated with reading because we read at our perfect levels! In order for each of my 24 students to be able to read at their perfect level, we need lots of choices so we do not get bored reading!

My classroom is full of 24 lively second graders on the West side of Chicago.

Most of my students are English Language Learners who benefit from reading at their own level. 98% of my students receive free/reduced lunch services during the school day. Even though my kids have daily challenges outside of school, in the classroom, every child is eager and ready to learn. My students have a strong sense of community that carries throughout our school day. Any visitor can see that my students truly care for one another and truly value their education.

My Project

Since my students are ELLs, reading can be a profound challenge. If my students receive more leveled books in both fiction and nonfiction, they will be able to feel successful every day. Beginning readers need to start at their perfect level. Once they have practiced accurately reading that particular level fluently, they may advance to the next level of text. Each level is determined by the number of multi-syllable words, sentence structure, and vocabulary difficulty. Once a student has mastered a level and begun the next, they are considered to be progressing in their reading. Leveled readers are very difficult to find in nonfiction texts at a lower level. It is imperative that students become accustomed to reading various genres to enhance their ability to locate facts and gain information. Students will be able to become comfortable and confident in skills such as these at their own level of reading.

This project is extremely important to our classroom.

It will impact my students' education for years to come, seeing that reading is a fundamental part of learning. It will provide student choice and encourage interests in the topics of books they are reading. I encourage you to support this project to instill a love for reading in each of my learners, no matter what level they are reading!
