Help me give my students the high-quality, interactive, immersive science education they deserve by providing me with the tools to adapt to teaching-from-home with a MacBook Air.
My students are naturally inquisitive and dedicated. They enjoy learning science by discussing and by sharing their ideas and experience with their peers when trying to explain a naturally occurring phenomenon. It is a pleasure for me to see them make a scientific argument about how and why things happen. My favorite part of teaching is hearing the students share their personal experiences, and these deeply personal stories help me understand my students and help me create lesson plans that guide their thinking towards a deeper understanding of the topic.
Despite the challenges, my students eagerly look forward to doing the hands-on activity I suggest every week.
Many of them start the assignment mere minutes after it is posted!
My students are supported by a wonderful community of teachers, students, and parents who are involved and supportive. Teamwork and collaboration are emphasized in the culture of the school.
Overall, my students have shown great resilience and created an incredible student community. Even though so much is going on in the world right now, this classroom has become a safe space for students to learn, grow, and support each other.
My Project
I am the primary science instructor for every student at my school (grades 1-6). My goal is to actively engage my students in learning science concepts. I teach beyond the book. I would like them to take on the roles of scientists, engineers, architects, change-makers to investigate and figure out real-world phenomenon. In the absence of any district-provided science textbooks and curriculum, I have created web-based resources to meet the needs of my students. This has taken an immense amount of personal effort and is rendered even more difficult when it has to be done on old, slow district-provided computers.
To make distance-teaching more effective, I would like to create video lessons, edit assignments, make online science lab experiences, and bring in guest speakers, and all of this will only be possible with access to a new laptop.
My students deserve a high-quality education from their homes. Help me give them that!
