I teach 8th and 9th grade in a high-need, inner city school where funds for texts are severely limited. A majority of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. Home supplied funds for school supplies are difficult for the students to acquire. Many of the students struggle with reading and comprehension which can cause attention span issues.
The funds needed to purchase novels and plays are just not available. Shakespeare, in the traditional format, is difficult for my student to comprehend. Graphic novels fly off my shelves as the students perceive the "comic" style to be an easier format. Graphic novel versions we have used at school have increased our students' success rate.
Research shows that the skills needed to interpret a graphic novel are complex. Using a graphic novel version of Romeo and Juliet will provide the scaffolding needed to understand Shakespeare's original work.
Your assistance will ensure that all my students will be able to be able to understand the themes of Romeo and Juliet.
