Romeo and Juliet: A Critical Analysis of Romance

My Project

I want to use this assessable version of Romeo and Juliet to both teach my freshmen how to read and understand Shakespeare as well as critically analyze the concept of romance and its effects. This graphic novel version of the story allows the students to see who is speaking and allows them to be fully immersed in that world. I plan to have them act out the parts and retell each scene in their own words to really ensure comprehension. Shakespeare is notoriously difficult for most people to read and understand which makes him an essential part of urban education. My students deserve as many tools necessary to give them access to as much success as possible and being able to read and understand this text is a great stepping stone.

I've been at this school for two years now and I saw firsthand how engaged the students can be if I have the right tools.

My lessons are creative and culturally relevant but the materials I'm given are anything but. This graphic novel version of Romeo and Juliet is the perfect bridge for that! It allows me to be creative with how I teach a Shakespearean text and allows for the students to easily understand it. The language barrier is lessened and we can focus on the critical analysis of the text.
