it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Today’s Romeo and Juliet are culturally diverse; they are breaking the chains of the star-crossed lovers trope; they are defying ultimatums and forging new understanding of the “unknown;” they are learning personal boundaries and redefining the concept of love.
And they provide an important companion read to Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet.
Students can revel in the beauty of Shakespeare’s language and bemoan the hasty decisions made by children and adults alike in the play. And then, they can dive into a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet; discovering new and unique ways to deal with and view these difficult issues.
