Roman Myths In Modern Life

My students need to read the Roman myths and stories in English in order to solidify their understanding of the Latin language.

My Students

Today's "modern" world is too much flash and not enough substance. My students don't need computers, they need books. These Roman stories were the everyday reading of our Founding Fathers, and they are the basis of modern literature. I wish to give my students a solid foundation in the Classics.

My students attend an elite, public high school.

They are from all parts of our city. They worked hard in elementary school and will work even harder in high school. My classes are comprised of students from every race, creed, ethnicity, and gender. More than half of the student body come from poor families. We are a Title 1 school. Most will be the the first in their families to attend college. The students are hardworking, honest, and hungry for an education.

My Project

I teach teenagers. Their lives are the very definition of flux. My students want to grow up and be successful adults but the transition can be painful, awkward, and stressful. Ovid's entire Metamorphoses illustrates both physical and moral transitions. Ovid's stories are entertaining as mythology but are equally as informative as a window into the ancient world. In our modern world we worry about gradual global warming. For the citizens of Pompeii, global warming came suddenly. 1,800 years later, archaeologists uncovered Pompeii. From this discovery, we have learned much about Roman daily life. By reading Robert Harris' novel students will see that a 2,000 year old city is not that much different from today's world.

My students translate Caesar and Ovid from Latin to English.

These books will give the students the needed background information to but their translations into proper context. Moreover, the books will allow the students to explore more about antiquity than our current text books offer. My students asks powerful questions like "What if ....?" and "How come...?" These texts will enable the students to find their answers and formulate new ones.
