Rolling Towards Inclusivity: Large Tricycles in Unified PE Classes

Help me give my students large tricycles to accommodate some physical limitations and allow them to participate in physical activity in a Unified PE class.

  • $3,015 goal

My Project

In 2022 our school started Club Unified, a club with the sole intention of fostering friendships between students in special education classrooms with their peers in general education classrooms. Since it's start, we have continued to improve our club by becoming a Unified Champion School and attending multiple Special Olympic events. We have seen the benefits of this club firsthand as the inclusivity and just overall friendliness of our student body with one another has improved.

To further enhance our program and support our ultimate goal of full inclusion, we are now working on a Unified PE class.

In order for this class to be successful, we are in need of some large tricycles to allow our students with physical disabilities to still participate in the cardio and movement portions of class.

Physical Education classes involve a lot of movement and cardio. However, not all students are physically able to run or walk long distances. Riding large tricycles offers students with special needs an opportunity to engage in physical activity and develop important motor skills such as coordination, balance, and strength. These activities can contribute to their overall physical development and well-being.

When other students in class play games that require fast movement or long distance movements, students with physical disabilities can keep up by using the tricycles instead of being expected to walk or run. This will allow them to still participate in the activity despite any physical disabilities they may have.

In summary, the addition of large tricycles for our students with special needs will drastically improve our Unified PE class and move us closer to our ultimate goal of being a fully unified school.
