My students yearn for chances to explore technology. President Obama was quoted as saying, “Don't just play on your phone, program it.” Through this project, my students will learn to code, which will be as important as reading and arithmetic in the very near future
I teach a super group of fifth graders.
My students are excited to come to school each day and to learn from each other. They use their critical thinking skills to ask good questions and analyze information. They are creative and become excited any time we can incorporate technology and the arts into our lessons. My students collaborate with each other to create final products that demonstrate their learning.
My Project
It is for these reasons that I want to bring SPRK edition of Sphero with protective covers to our classroom. Sphero is an interactive robot that students can program to complete challenges that they have created. My students will use the cones to be stored in the requested bins, to create an obstacle course for Sphero to complete. Students will integrate the arts by designing a chariot for Sphero to pull in these races. They'll also integrate art when they program Sphero to dance to their favorite song, create digital images of Sphero, and draw Sphero as the main character in their narratives. By incorporating Sphero into our classroom, my students will learn the basics of programming, a critical skill for their futures. They'll be able to integrate their love of technology with their love of exploring new ideas as they learn how to control and use Sphero in the classroom. I'm excited about the SPRK program’s online lessons that I can use with my students as we learn more about Sphero.
We need to get kids interested in coding now, and Sphero will definitely have my students hooked!
Through this project, students will explore the world of robotics as they learn basic programming skills that will help them be successful in the future. Incorporating Sphero will allow my students to demonstrate the foundations of inquiry: community, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity as they work together to learn how to use technology to create something new.
